Three days (and copious sunburn) later, I’m back. My heart did not explode when I had a coffee yesterday, neither did I vibrate out of existence from a sugar high after I had a delicious brownie yesterday. I’m honestly almost a little disappointed that after trying a little bit of everything again that none of it seemed to have an effect on me that would warrant some fun suffering/content for you all to enjoy. So, apologies, but what you’ll get is some pictures of what I consumed on Wednesday (my first day of ‘freedom’) because lest you think that maybe I’m actually not that bad of a guy after all, I smack you across the face with Instagram-style food pics!
Before I get to that though, I’ll point out some moments where I’ve paused when making eating/drinking choices. Milk, for example. Now, since the challenge ended I’ve not imbibed very much caffeine, purely because I’ve realised that I don’t actually need it like I thought I did. I’ve eschewed milk when drinking my fake coffee stuff (that I’ve been enjoying throughout last month and continue to drink) and when having a decaf coffee yesterday at work I almost went to put milk in, then stopped. That was for two reasons – firstly, I’ve kind of become accustomed to enjoying bitter flavours more, and secondly because I had images of unhappy cows being milked. I’ve not completely cut it out but until I can get to a shop where I can get some organic milk/get to Borough market (a big food market for all you people outside my London bubble) to get milk where I can be a lot more certain the cows are happy and treated well, I don’t want that little bit of guilt over my head.
A similar thing goes for meat. On Wednesday I did have a pork dish, but since then the only meat I’ve had is in the form of a chili ready meal I bought, and I only got that because it was heavily reduced (I got 99 problems and money is a bitch and is responsible for most of the afore-mentioned problems – this is a great example of why Jay-Z did not take kindly to me offering to guest on his latest tracks). Seeking a little bit of easy comfort food for this evening – it’s Friday and I’m being super cool and staying in (ROCK ON!) – I went to get a pizza. Normally I’d grab a sweet chili chicken one but again, the animal guilt. So it’s margherita time, with a healthy lashing of Worcester Sauce on top, obviously. You’re welcome for that tip if you’ve never tried it before.
Aside from continuing to reduce the animal products and the caffeine in my diet, I’m avoiding the sweet stuff a little more too. Don’t get me wrong though, I have indulged a little but I’m far more conscious of it than before and choosing not to have sugary treats when offered. I’ve had a couple of hot drinks with about half a sugar in (much reduced from my multiple cups of coffee a day containing two sugars) so I’m not off the wagon entirely but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t feel a little bit good/empowering/smugly (it’s like bigly – if Trump can do it so can I damn it) to have some willpower for once.
Finally, drinking. I’ve had a bottle of beer and two glasses of wine. I was happy to stop drinking after that, not because I was feeling a little tipsy (ok, maybe that’s part of it) but I realised I didn’t need anymore. As outlined before I’m not a huge drinker anyway but I definitely feel this month has been a great step towards not feeling social pressure to drink when out with friends and I’d like to keep that up.
I DID just munch my way through a big bag of crisps. I’ll have to work on that bit. Ahem. Don’t judge me. Well, don’t judge me for that anyway; there are plenty of other things to shame me about.
I’ve not done any real cooking since the end of the challenge but get off my back, mannnn, it’s only been three days!
I still love you. Not you though. You know what you did.
Enjoy all the slightly badly taken pictures of what I had to eat on my first night of non-stupid-challenge times and thank you all again!
Stay fresh, stay funky, stay French (especially if you already are) x
